Google turns up 1,300,000,000 hits for 'love' which must equate to the number of emotions the word evokes. In the impossible passions of I Am Love and Undertow, the sugar-rush of Au revoir Taipei, the melancholy of animated delight The Illusionist, and the monstrousness of The Refuge, love is a many splendid, tough and impenetrable thing. The complexities of familial love are explored in Apart Together and Honey; family also figures in two wonderful films from New Zealand - Home by Christmas and This Way of Life, as well as Australian debut Little Sparrows. Ben Foster and Woody Harrelson are outstanding as soldiers who strike up a deep friendship in The Messenger. Love Me is rounded out by two extraordinary documentaries - Babies and Nenette - whose subjects (human and orangutan respectively) inspire profound, universal love.

Films clockwise: Nenette, Apart Together, Babies, I Am Love, Au revoir Tapei.
