Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance 1989 – in a competition that included Sex, Lies, and Videotape – this story of an Italian-American wedding is Nancy Savoca’s impressive feature directorial debut.

A young couple, Michael (Ron Eldard, Black Hawk Down) and Donna (Annabella Sciorra, The Sopranos), are frantically preparing for their wedding in the Bronx. Before they make it down the aisle, they must face the societal pressure and gender expectations that dictate their every move – not to mention their own commitment issues. Set in dive bars, pizzerias, and living rooms, True Love offers a nuanced and funny meditation on modern marriage. This seminal work heralded the arrival of a fresh voice in cinema and marked an important contribution to the ’90s indie movement.

Limited seats are available for patrons requiring access for wheelchairs, low vision and hearing loop. Please contact our ticketing team directly on 1300 733 733 or tickets@sff.org.au to complete your booking.
A lot of scenes unfold like a movie by John Cassavetes, where the events seem to be happening while we watch them, and the camera seems to be present by a lucky chance
Roger Ebert
True Love depicts a specifically female experience that had never before been quite so sharply limned in an American feature film

Nancy Savoca’s first short film is an intimate portrait of a young mother agonising over whether to pursue a divorce – or stay and suffer, as is expected of women in her Italian-American community. Featuring an all-female cast.
