Sustainable Future Award

The Sustainable Future Award is presented to a narrative or documentary film of any length that deepens our knowledge and awareness of the impact of the global climate emergency. The director of the film receives a $40,000 cash prize, made possible by a syndicate of passionate climate activists led by Award sponsor, Amanda Maple-Brown. The winner will be announced on SFF Closing Night, 16 June.

Grove of Giants

Short Film The Huon Valley, Tasmania, contains the largest stand of old-growth blue gums in the world. But these towering ancient trees are scheduled for destruction. Can a passionate team of climbers and scientists prove the trees’ immense capacity for environmental good before the axe falls?

The Waiting

Short Film Beautifully animated drawings vividly illustrate a biologist’s research into the mysterious disappearance of various frog species in Central America’s rainforests. Award winner at London International Animation FF, Hamptons FF and Sarasota FF.

The Feast

Short Film A fisherwoman determined to save a dying lake takes on a powerful local politician by cooking him a remarkable meal. A Special Jury Award winner at Clermont-Ferrand 2024 from director Rishi Chandna (Tungrus, SFF 2019).

Wilding

Documentary Based on a bestseller by Isabella Tree, Wilding is the inspirational story of an English country estate that joins the rewilding revolution and thrives. London Film Festival selection.

Black Snow

Documentary In a remote Russian mining town, black snow falls due to the extreme pollution. A Siberian eco-activist, dubbed the ‘Erin Brockovich of Russia’, fights for her community in this award-winning doc.

The Battle For Laikipia

Documentary A powerful film set in Kenya’s spectacular Laikipia region, home to traditional herders, wildlife conservationists, and white pastoralists; a place where drought, politics and colonial history collide.
