Journalist Shiori Itō fights to bring her high-profile rapist to justice in this Sundance-selected, Oscar-nominated first-person documentary exposing outdated gender politics.
When Shiori told the police that she was sexually assaulted by a powerful media figure, the authorities decided not to pursue the case. Her parents also discouraged her, knowing their daughter would be stigmatised. Nevertheless, Shiori decided to go public, and was subsequently slandered and forced into hiding. Bravely, she continued her own investigation, exposing Japan’s outdated judicial system and patriarchal norms, writing a bestselling book, and eventually directing this film. Shiori’s raw and courageous documentary echoes sexual assault cases in our own backyard and makes for timely and essential viewing.
