Household Saints
Adapted from a book by Francine Prose that director Nancy Savoca discovered while in film school at NYU, and executive produced by Jonathan Demme, the lauded Household Saints missed the transition from VHS to DVD and languished out of print until this beautiful new restoration. Savoca was raised defiantly Catholic, and this is the most personal of her films. Rich with metaphor and packed with layered, against-type performances by the whole cast (including Judith Malina, Michael Imperioli, Michael Rispoli and Victor Argo), the film was shot on a Lower East Side set originally built for Michael Cimino’s Year of the Dragon. Household Saints perfectly captures the spirit and spirituality of the Italian-American experience.
