Resonance
Witness a one-off live musical event at the State Library with this hypnotic short documentary portrait of a classical quartet, to be followed by a discussion on cross-disciplinary collaboration, and a performance by the Australian National Academy of Music's Rosina Quartet, performing compositions from Sculthorpe and Mendelssohn.
From directors Jayden Rathsam Hua and Kate Vinen (Acts for the Invisible, SFF 2021), Resonance opens with scenes of construction outside Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building. Workers are building what looks like a large wooden box. We soon realise that it’s a performance space, knocked up overnight and then gone – an appropriate symbol for the ephemeral nature of live performance. Capturing footage of a quartet’s rehearsal process and subsequent concert, the directors highlight the various points of connection contained within a live performance: between the quartet members; between the quartet and the audience; and between all the participants and the physical space they share.
Resonance is presented by the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) and the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), in a collaboration was undertaken as part of the UK/Australia Season of Culture, with the support of Michael Napthali, Director (Australia), UK/Australia Season of Culture and the International Cultural Diplomacy Arts Fund.
