The Ballad Of Suzanne Cesaire
Suzanne Césaire was a key figure in the Négritude movement, co-founding the dissident journal Tropiques while living on blockaded Martinique during World War Two. Yet her brilliance has historically been eclipsed by a focus on her male associates: her famous husband, Aimé Césaire (Martinique’s former President), and surrealist poet André Breton. Inspired by the experimental form of Césaire’s surviving writings, Hunt-Ehrlich deconstructs the biopic genre, acknowledging the impossibility of reviving a legacy that was wilfully erased. Preceded by Conspiracy (2022) a stunning short about sculptor Simone Leigh which pays further tribute to the unsung labour of Black female artists.
