Samuel and Dan Habib’s feature debut is a powerful coming-of-age story about holding onto dreams and exploring what the future holds for people living with disability.
21-year-old Samuel is curious about dating, sex, college, and living away from home. Determined to avoid the statistical realities faced by many disabled adults (including unemployment and institutionalisation), Samuel enlists some of America’s most well-known and rebellious disability advocates and asks their advice on how he can achieve his dreams. Produced by James Lebrecht and Sara Bolder (Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution), The Ride Ahead includes interviews with US author and pioneering disability rights advocate Judith Heumann, alongside human rights activist and Krip-Hop artist Keith Jones.
We have a … guiding principle: if we increase joy and decrease pain in this world, we are doing something right. Our film work is a vehicle to make disabled lives visible and better understood
Dan and Samuel Habib on The Ride Ahead
My goal for the film is that people won’t talk down to disabled people. I want everyone to know that disabled people demand respect and rights. And I want other young adults with disabilities to have the same opportunities that I’ve had for health care, inclusive education, college, assistive technology, jobs, making friends, advocacy, and independent living
Samuel Habib
When non-disabled people tell our stories, we only get to have three stories: ‘Help me, I’m disabled.’ ‘Cure me.’ ‘Kill me.’ We have to tell our own stories
Maysoon Zayid quoted in the film
