In this SXSW Audience winner based on an inspiring true story, a small group of prisoners find hope, connection and meaning as they attempt to stage their own original production, “Breakin’ the Mummy’s Code”, from inception to opening night.
Divine G (Oscar Nominee Colman Domingo) spearheads the Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) program, that stages theatre productions with fellow incarcerated men. With the introduction of a new member, budding actors are inspired to move away from their regular rotation of Shakespeare, and soon opt to devise an original comedy from scratch instead. Opening up to vulnerability, and accepting advice and help from each other, the men form a friendship of reciprocal support.

Brimming with empathy and compassion, an outstanding Colman Domingo deftly leads a cast of real former inmates. Greg Kwedar’s expert direction tells a story of the redemptive power of art, creativity and connection with others, that is authentic and hopeful.
One of the year’s most powerful works … The performances are incredible across the board.
