Synopsis

Diligent nurse Prabha works in a busy hospital where she is also responsible for the training of new nurses. Her roommate is Anu, a younger fellow nurse. One day, Prabha receives the unexpected gift of a rice cooker from her estranged husband, who has worked abroad for many years. The gift causes her an inordinate amount of distress, forcing her to reflect on her marriage, and on the clear romantic interest of a doctor at the hospital. Meanwhile, Anu struggles to find a spot in the city to be intimate with her boyfriend, who is of a different religion. A trip to a beach town to help a friend provides an opportunity for both women to express their desires.

Kapadia won the Golden Eye for Best Documentary at Cannes in 2021 for her hybrid film, A Night of Knowing Nothing. Here, in her first fiction film, she delivers on that great promise. Kapadia captures the city of Mumbai in an observational and dreamlike manner, revelling in the lives and dreams of two women in their search for love.
