Cottontail
Lily Franky (Shoplifters, SFF 2018) delivers a heartfelt performance as Kenzaburo, a man struggling with the death of his wife, Akiko. Lost in his grief and memories, Kenzaburo ignores his son Toshi’s attempts to connect. But Akiko had a dying wish: for her ashes to be scattered across Lake Windermere, based on a rosy childhood memory of chasing a Peter Rabbit-esque cottontail. Father and son embark on a cross-cultural journey, taking us from the noise of Tokyo to the vast English countryside. Winner of Best First Film in Rome, director Patrick Dickinson demonstrates a deft hand in this gentle tale of unspoken regret. Ciarán Hinds (Belfast) also stars.
