Stand-up comic Max (Bobby Cannavale) and his autistic son Ezra (amazing newcomer William A. Fitzgerald) take a road trip to Hollywood in this hilarious and very moving film also starring Rose Byrne and Robert De Niro. Toronto selected.

Drawn from the experiences of screenwriter Tony Spiridakis, Ezra rings true from the moment we meet this spirited 11-year-old and his parents Max (Cannavale) and Jenna (Byrne). Though they’re divorced and have clashing ideas on what’s best for their son, Max and Jenna love Ezra with all their hearts. Max is a stand-up comedian – and when an opportunity arises in L.A., he takes Ezra along for a cross-country ride that changes everyone’s lives. Spiridakis’ beautifully observed script, Tony Goldwyn’s sensitive direction and a superb cast – including De Niro as Max’s gruff father, plus Whoopi Golberg, Rainn Wilson and Vera Farmiga – make this a tender, humorous and poignant road movie to remember. Neurodivergent child actor Fitzgerald is sensational in the titular role.

Earns its crowd-hugging stripes legitimately thanks to its superb ensemble and sensitive direction that never gets in the way of its knowing script
Ryan Gajewski , The Hollywood Reporter
Some of the most lyrical moments in the film are conjured by Fitzgerald, a richly talented actor who brings a poetic depth to Ezra, from his passionate outbursts to the subtle shifts in his countenance — plus some kickass echolalia!
Anne Borden King, Thinking Person’s Guide to Autism
There is a clear amount of love and affection that was put into telling this story the right way
