Rapture
Opening with an indelible scene as the villagers come together to gather cicadas at night, Rapture looks incisively at a small community beginning to fray, potentially a microcosm for societies the world over. When a boy disappears, wild rumours consume the inhabitants, with the blame laid squarely on mysterious outsiders. Meanwhile, the village priest speaks of looming darkness, and urges the donation of considerable funds in exchange for his protection. Director Dominic M Sangma expertly ramps up the tension while gradually revealing more about the village and its mysteries – before introducing a spectacular magic realist diversion. A singular film from India, Rapture reveals an extraordinary talent in Sangma.
