Made In England: The Films Of Powell And Pressburger
As a child in 1950s New York, Scorsese discovered the work of Powell and Pressburger on American television. It was the beginning of a lifelong fascination with their oeuvre and inspired his own stellar career. Englishman Powell met Pressburger, a Hungarian Jewish exile, in 1939 London. Over the following years, they made 19 feature films together. Using film clips and archive footage, Scorsese steps us through their celebrated collaborations – from The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (SFF 1986) to Black Narcissus (SFF 2008), The Tales of Hoffmann, and Powell’s own, controversial Peeping Tom (also screening restored in this year’s Festival).
